Uniqlo’s entire brand has always been about minimalist life-style wear, so it shouldn’t be too surprising that this is reflected in Federer’s outfit. It is definitely a far cry from some of the busy outfits in the AO 2020, but I do enjoy the simple presentation and crisp color combination.

In general, Uniqlo loves to use uncommon color palettes, at least in relative to the sporting world. When we look at the outfit on a whole, we must always include the court background as the canvas. The combination of the royal purple, a rarity in tennis, synergizes very well with the blue tones of the AO courts.

Another common characteristic from Uniqlo, is focusing their creativity on small details. They’ve played with the collars in the past, and the v-neck paired with subtle purple & white in the back, is a nice touch. I also want to point your attention to the small little textures on the shirt and shorts. I’m really big on these small textures which has always lacking in the past.

So from a fashion standpoint it’s definitely not bad , IMHO. I understand the community has been largely divided — some finding it horridly boring and others enjoying the crisp presentation. Personally I like it, but believe that it’s missing just one more element or innovation to take it to another level. On a final note, the purple shorts and v-neck are deceivingly versatile as stand-alones. Take a look at one of our TennisCraft players, Rich, rock the shorts in his practice session.
