In contention for best match of the year with no shortages of flashy highlights or blistering shots. Thiem starts this match absolutely dominating Nadal, no exaggeration. The man hands him a bagel.

Yet in true Rafa fashion, he weathers the storm and fights for every single point. Both players were constantly trading blows, and it felt as if the intensity never died down — a reflection of both their resolve as players. Even at the conclusion of the match, it came down to the wire, with no clear winner right until the very end of the tie-break. This match along with Rafa’s match with Medvedev, showcases just how close The Next Gen is breaking through. The time is coming, but not quite yet…
