ABOUT

8/8/2022 — A major update, revamping the layout and design of the Match Database. The goal was to better streamline matches in addition to making better layouts and scrolling “easiness” in the database itself.

The Match Database organizes past matches by year and tournament, and helps you find some of the greatest matches of all time.

All matches link out to YouTube and are uploaded by the official tennis bodies. Therefore, ALL MATCHES ARE COPYRIGHT FRIENDLY.

The Match Database is designed so that new tennis fans can experience some of the most epic moments in tennis, as well as providing veteran fans a way to relive them or discover new favorites.

These are four major components:

  1. Database: Over a thousand epic matches, available as extended highlights or the full match.

  2. Greatest Matches of All Time: An exclusive selection of matches that define or transcend an era.

    • From time to time, I host discussions at /r/tennis so that the list is a reflection of the general tennis community. It is encouraged to give your opinion as the list will change from time to time.

  3. Categories : A diversified set of topics and themes to make tennis fun and easy to watch.

  4. YouTube Playlists: These are the playlists that I use to keep track of all the matches for the site. While the Match Database is designed to streamline matches for you, some may find it more useful to have the entire playlist at hand. Just beware that some of these playlists are massive, so it may take some time to load. Everything is divided into categories, such as full matches, atp extended highlights, Roger Federer, etc .

BACKGROUND

Tennis fans have long wished for two things: a way to watch tennis for free and a database with links to their favorite matches. Sadly, most attempts were not successful mostly due to copyright laws, but also in execution.

To watch tennis consistently, you had to rely on services such as Tennis Channel, Tennis TV, ESPN, etc. YouTube has been a blessing, because generally, it is easy find matches that you want if you know what you are looking for. But there is a catch.

YouTube is a little bit like the wild, wild west — some matches will get taken down instantly, and others may stay for years at a time. The problem is twofold: all links would need to be constantly updated and no website would want to shoulder the risk of being shut down. So for the most part, people would just watch tennis through whatever means possible. In recent years, I realized a solution, and one that was only possible due to recent trends.

If you can’t beat them, join them

The way the market and technology is shaping, more and more matches are being released officially, by the pro associations and Slams. What this means is that not only are we getting high quality videos, but ones that are also permanent, more or less. And strangely enough, the pandemic paved way for this.

Tennis fans are sometimes blinded by the four minute highlights during the tournament that they don’t realize that they often release full matches and extended highlights, after the fact. Live tennis will forever require some form of payment, that is inevitable. And highlights will always be short mid-tournament. That is simply how business and money works for broadcasting rights.

We cannot do anything about live tennis, but that is not my goal. Instead, what we can offer are past matches, and as it stands, there are hundreds of epic matches for you to watch. What I have done is sift through all the junk highlights and retain only the high quality ones. And the end product:

1560 Extended Highlights
482 Full Length Matches

And counting, of course. The trend is that we will get more and more official matches.

The Match Database is TennisCraft’s most ambitious project to date. The Match database is still in its early stages, but as time progresses, I hope it can mature as reliable and free platform for all tennis fans. I want to help new fans understand our love of the game, and help remind the veterans why they continue to.

Cheers!

I’ve spent hundreds of hours on this project over the last two years, and if this something that you enjoy, please consider donating to keep the site up! This site has never been about financial gain, and any little bit goes a long way for me so thank you!
